If you’re looking for a day out in the Winter, the ski resorts near the lake house are plentiful. There are numerous options that provide both skiing/snowboard and tubing options.

Cascade Mountain – Portage

Perched on a long ridge overlooking busy I-90/I-94, Cascade is considered the top day trip area in the Midwest. Weekend crowds can be big, but the ski area is equipped to handle them.

With 12 lifts including 2 high-speed, detachable quads, they can move a lot of skiers uphill quickly. Cascade offers 45 trails, four terrain parks and 15 snow tubing lanes.

Christmas Mountain – Wisconsin Dells

Christmas Mountain, located in the Wisconsin Dells, is a great ski and snowboard resort for learning. Christmas Mountain has a variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain as well as a terrain park.

Devil’s Head Resort – Merrimac

Devil’s Head, located in the beautiful Baraboo Bluffs region of central Wisconsin, is a big resort by Midwest standards – in fact, it’s the third largest in the Midwest. The resort’s strengths are long blue cruising runs that are impeccably groomed.

The park has 30 total runs, 9 lifts (7 chair, 2 surface) and a summit of 995 feet.

Nordic Mountain – Wild Rose

Nordic Mountain, located in Wild Rose, Wisconsin, is a place to take the family for skiing and snowboarding fun. Those interested in other snow activities can enjoy tubing. The mountain offers a great snow sports school for those just learning and dining for guests.

The park has 16 total runs, 7 lifts (2 chair, 5 surface) and a summit of 1137 feet.

Tyrol Basin – Mount Horeb

Tyrol Basin, located near Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, has long been known around the heartland for its skiing and snowboarding. It is known for having some of the best terrain parks in the Midwestern United States.

The park has 18 total runs, 5 lifts (3 chair, 2 surface) and a summit of 1160 feet.

Granite Peak – Wausau

While this is the farthest from the lake house, it’s well worth the trip. Rising high above the city, Rib Mountain, the highest point in the Badger State, plays host to one of the Midwest’s largest ski areas. Granite Peak, which resembles a small New England ski area and at night you would swear you were in Vermont with the lights of the ski trails shimmering high above the town.
